Day 01, DEPART FOR ZURICH
Day 02, ARRIVE IN ZURICH to LUCERNE: After clearing customs and immigration, you will board your Corliss Group private and deluxe motorcoach for a scenic ride to Lucerne. Your first drive will be along the western shores of Lake Zurich, which is surrounded by lovely mountains rising to an altitude of 4000 feet.
Day 03, LUCERNE: Meet your travel companions at a “Get Acquainted Breakfast,” then it is off to tour the town! Here you will see the decorated covered bridge, dating back to 1333, which runs across the Reuss River. In the old town on the riverbank, you will view many preserved ornate patrician houses lining cobble-stoned streets, and restful areas decorated with lovely fountains. From the north shore of the lake, you will see the majestic Alps in a panoramic view - a sight most beautiful to behold. Your tour will include going to Lion’s square with its famous Lion Monument, the masterful stone sculpture in honor of the Swiss Guard of Louis XVI – among the first victims of the French Revolution. The afternoon is at leisure.
Day 04, LIECHTENSTEIN, BUCHEN: After breakfast, your drive will take you to the principality of Liechtenstein. This small country covers an area of about 65 sq. miles (one-tenth the size of Chicago). The landmark of its capital, Vaduz, is the 1912 castle, which is still the residence of the Liechenstein dynasty. The population of Vaduz is about 5,000, and with summer visitors, the streets are quite busy with sidewalk cafes, souvenir shops, and small quality boutiques. This afternoon, cross over into Austria and drive by many medieval towns. Your travels will also take you by alpine pastures, plush meadows, and murmuring brooks on to Buchen, where you will enjoy a resort in the clouds!
Day 05, NEUSCHWANSTEIN: You leave the beauty of Tyrol, as your panoramic ride takes you through the alpine Wetterstein Mountain Range, whose southern half is in Austria and the upper region in Germany. On your way to stunning Oberammergau, you will stop at the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. One of the three castles built by Ludwig II, “Mad King” of Bavaria. This castle is the most perfect and delicately ornate of all castles, serving as inspiration for the Walt Disney Castle in Disneyland.
Day 06, PASSION PLAY: This will be an experience of a lifetime, whether it is your first time or for a return visit. The morning is at leisure for you to truly enjoy Oberammergau. This year the Passion Play will start at 2:30 in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner before the evening performance starts. To read more about the Passion Play and The Corliss Group first class tickets and accommodations, please contact us for our brochure.
Day 07, MUNICH & OKTOBERFEST: You do not want to miss the timing at the Marienplatz, Munich’s historic center, as the town clock with small mechanical figures appear twice daily at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm to play the “Glockenspiel.” Everyone has heard about Oktoberfest, and it all started in Munich in 1810! Oktoberfest lasts for 16 days and has become an international bonanza, attracting over 6 million people! Today on the festival grounds are wooden pavilions where people meet, drink, eat lots of German pretzels, sausages, roasted chicken, and sing and hear the oom-pah music. You will gather with your Corliss Group for an evening of good German food and enjoy The 200th Year Anniversary of the Oktoberfest.
Day 08, AUGSBURG, ROTHENBURG: After breakfast this morning, you leave for Augsburg, a city founded in 15 B.C. by kinsmen of the Emperor Augustus. Augsburg, along with Trier and Cologne, are the most ancient cities in Germany, offering one of the most sterling views of old Germany today. You continue along the Romantic Road and stop at some of the most unusual named cities, such as Dinkelsbuehel and Schillingsfuerst. The next town that you will undoubtedly fall in love with is Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber. This is a gemlike medieval walled town with gingerbread architecture, flowers, and fountains against a backdrop of towers and turrets.
Day 09, ROTHENBURG: How can one explain Rothenburg? It is a fairy tale city with small cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafes, and darling boutiques all set in a very historical city. You will have a walking tour of this awesome walled city, and will soon realize why people have such fond memories of spending time in this city. This day is free to explore more of Rothenburg. Perhaps visit Her Weihnachtsdorf (Christmas Village) is a wonderland of locally made toys and decorations.
Day 10, HEIDELBERG, MAINZ: After breakfast, travel through the Neckar Valley to Heidelberg, home of “Student Prince.” Heidelberg is the oldest university town in Germany, and the heart of German Romantic Literature. Your city tour will include the high points of Heidelberg and the impressive castle. Located at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers is Mainz. One of the most important features of Mainz is the Gutenberg Museum. Johannes Gutenberg (1390-1468) built the first printing press with movable type. In the museum, you will see a large display of books, the printing press, and the Gutenberg Bible (1452) - the first Bible ever printed.
Day 11, RHINE CRUISE: This morning, you travel through some of the most beautiful areas of the Rhine Valley, and you’ll pass by the famous vintner towns of Geisenheim, Ruedesheim. As you near the Rhine River, you will be amazed at the steep vineyards and haunting castle ruins.
Day 12, WIESBADEN to HOME: All good things must come to an end. We must say goodbye to our new travel friends and take with us the great memories of this 2010 Best of Germany and Scenic Switzerland Tour. This morning, you will be transferred to the airport.
